More Birthdays in a Perfect World

My birthday is August 13. It’s coming up pretty fast, and it’ll be my 37th. I’ve never had cancer. Some people I love have had cancer, just like I bet some people you love have.

Some of them are still here to blow candles out on their birthdays, and on those days I quietly note my joy that another marker has passed. Another year the cancer is further in our rear-view mirror, becoming a smaller piece of the landscape.

The American Cancer Society is giving you a shot at being a rock star. Go to More and share a video of you belting out your ode to birthdays, whatever way you see fit.

I’m thrilled to announce I’ll be acting as the Judge for the video competition, and the finalists will have their videos featured alongside some of the biggest stars in music-so go on, go find your leather pants and get ready to rock out for more birthdays.

To kick you off, I wrote my birthday song to the tune of Liz Phair’s classic “Perfect World”, one of my all time favorite songs. This is my No Cancer twist on it, because in my perfect world, there would be none whatsoever, and there would be all the birthdays we could blow the candles out on- forever and ever.

PS Be gentle- I’m no Liz Phair. But for this??? I’ll sing in public.

*Note: My entry is of course not official, because, yep, I AM the judge and I may be a little biased on my own behalf. Holla when you’ve put up your vid, I want to go see it ASAP!

I work for the American Cancer Society and wanted to thank you for your support for our "Create More Birthdays" contest, and for joining our fight for a world with less cancer and more birthdays. I absolutely LOVE your video (I'm a huge Liz fan!) and just sent it on to several of my colleagues. Thanks for the inspiration!

Jeanine! Thank you SO MUCH, that means a great deal to me. I really respect the work your society does, and I KNOW it helps so many people. I love the way More Birthdays reframes our innate fear of the uncontrollable parts of cancer into the hopeful end of the rainbow piece we ALL want- more birthdays.

Ahh, Lindsay, I am one of whom you write. Your own Mother. I am one of the fortunate ones, whose cancer was discovered on a random mammogram. I had no reason to expect that - no reason to fear. And yet - but chance had it that a wonderfully talented doctor team had my case and it was also wonderful that my insurance company (as other insurance companies) took this seriously and "no questions asked". I am happy, happy, happy to have more birthdays with you - and your children. And I am so thankful to all who helped me through those trying times and then I raise my thanks to God and ask for more birthdays to spend with you. Love, Mama

Thanks, Mama!!! WE'RE so happy that you're here, and I'm so grateful that I grew up with someone who is such a great example of being a good friend and family member, and just generally livin' life right.:) I'm safely on the ground in Nairobi now, so you can quit worrying.:) They're taking very good care of us here. Love, Your Big Baby
