Owl City “Fireflies”

Date February 24, 2010

I’m a wee bit obsessed with this song right now. Something about it is haunting and upbeat at the same time. I love how when it comes on in the car, my three and five year old instantly glaze over and go into their head bobble mode. Something about it speaks deeply to them, and that makes me happy.

So I dug into Owl City a bit, to discover that it’s the brainchild of Adam Young, a shy kid from Minnesota. He was tinkering with electronic music in his parent’s basement, while working at a Coca Cola distribution plant. In a Rolling Stone Daily interview, he says, “It allowed me to sort of dream up these projects. One wound up being Owl City. I thought through how I wanted it to sound, how I wanted the records to look, everything. Sometimes working in a monotonous environment can really free up your imagination.”

Having once stuck labels on vitamin packages in a factory night shift, I can attest to that.

But Adam’s music didn’t stay in the basement- on Myspace, one of his songs racked up over six million views, which helped land a traditional record deal with Universal Republic records. That label released Owl City’s debut, “Ocean Eyes”.

Check it out, let me know what you think!

    I. LOVE. that song! I’ve heard it a few times but haven’t seen the video until now. The retro thing makes me swoon. Time to add that to my tunes…I bet my boys would love it!

Currently my daughter’s favorite. On a recent car trip my daughter’s need to hear Fireflies over and over again was at odds with my son’s desire to hear the Ghostbusters theme. My teen just turned up her own ipod to drown out these two songs.

I’m partial to listening to the same song repeatedly so my younger two come by their tendency naturally.

I actually hate that song but I like the idea of dicking off at work.

Thanks for sharing. I heard this song the other day but didn’t catch who it was by. My boys love it too. I think it’s the electronic sound – practically hypnotic.

I’m going nuts about this song for months! It makes me instantly happy and I can listen to it dozen of times without being annoyed. I love all the other songs from this album to but this one is definitely my favorite. And I’m really not so young any more – but who cares, right?

I think “Fireflies” got my daughter, Sophie, through all the snow this winter. It made her think happy thoughts about summer.

Laura! I can’t believe Sophie’s old enough to be choosing music, but there it is.:) J is 13 now, if you can believe it. Ooof! Time is fast. Thank you for stopping by, and I’m glad she had Fireflies for the winter.:) xoxo, L
