Bat for Lashes=Astounding

On the way home from Philly over the weekend, I heard an interview on sirius XMU with Natasha from Bat For Lashes- I’ve heard of this band for a while, but never gotten too far into them. But her description of their recording process, coupled with the sngs they played in between, made a believer out of me.

Their latest album, “Two Suns”, was recorded in a numbe of places, but largely in Wales, in a huge, rural house, surrounded by lush wet green grass for miles. Her description of taking a long cord and a microphone out into the woods, and holding it up to capture the sounds of the wind in the leaves, captivated me.

That attention to the whole picture, that knowledge of how the smallest organic piece of input into a song can be the butterfly wings that make it truly distinctive, makes me so happy. As she went through, track by track, describing the pieces they’d added and taken away sonically, I was smitten.

This song, “Daniel”, was up for a VMA last Sunday, but unfortunately didn’t win. But that’s OK. Sometimes, you don’t want everybody to get everything. For now, I can still pretend BFL is my indie discovery- but they’ll be huge soon enough.
