Beastie Boy MCA Announces cancer, but is so darn cute doing it.

By now, you’ve probably heard that the Beastie Boys have postponed their record release and upcoming summer tour due to MCA‘s salivary gland cancer diagnosis. While sobering news, MCA says it’s highly treatable, and caught early. And, it won’t affect his voice…” THAT’s Convenient,” he says in his announcement video, with a twinkle in his eye.

Can I just say how much I love the fact that MCA sat down in the studio with Adam Horovitz and made a video that sounds like he ran into us at the corner bodega?

He shares the news of his diagnosis as though updating friends, with the appropriate gravity of the fact that this will be an emotional blow to his audience. But it’s so conversational, “About a month…naw, more like two weeks ago…” As a long, looooong time B-Boys fan, I so appreciate this. We’ve been a part of their life since they were fighting for their right to party, and those crafty girls were trying to steal their stereos. The fact that they continue to embrace their fans as family is so endearing.

A few years ago, I took Dan to a sold-out 9:30 B-Boys show for Father’s Day. Unfortunately, the boys were delayed, because their train from New York broke down. That’s right, their train. Imagine chilling on the Acela, looking up, and seeing Mike D? I would swoon, I swear it.

So if you’re a Beastie Boy and you’re late to your own show, what do you do?

Order pizza for the whole club, that’s what. All 1200 plus people. They ran Domino’s ragged. Seriously, has there ever been a more class act?

Get well soon, MCA. And get back on that train, my man.
