Cartoons and Classical Music? I dig it.

Date July 10, 2009

You guys know that my kids have seen plenty of rock and roll, from Clutch to Gwar (although Gwar was by accident at a festival.:) But classical music? Not so much. But I believe that exposure to a wide variety of music can only be good for little people, so when presented with the chance to see the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra play with cartoons as a backdrop, I was all in. Here’s more info, in case you’re local and would care to join us tomorrow night.

“The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is going “Looney” on July 11, 2009 with “Bugs Bunny On Broadway,” the critically-acclaimed concert which showcases the world’s most beloved classic Warner Bros. Studios cartoons projected on the big screen overhead, while their original film scores are performed live, in perfect synchronization by The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Emmy Award-winning conductor George Daugherty will lead the orchestra as they take the stage at Merriweather Post Pavilion, Saturday July 11, 2009 at 8:30pm.

This unique concert will feature musical masterpieces of Wagner, Rossini, Strauss, Tchaikovsky, and others, as interpreted through the “hare-raising” cartoon scores of legendary Warner Bros. Studios composers Carl Stalling and Milt Franklyn, in such iconic Looney Tunes as “What’s Opera, Doc?,” “The Rabbit of Seville,” “Corny Concerto,” “Baton Bunny,” “Long-Haired Hare,” “High Note,” and many more.”

How about you guys? What kind of music has surprised you that your kids have loved? W has a passion for Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme”, which I guess shouldn’t surprise me- great bassline.

I took Sugarplum to one of the Met Opera broadcasts and she loved it. Literally sat on the edge of her seat the whole time. I ended up getting us tickets for the rest of the season.

Max likes Funk. I have three volumes of ‘classic’ funk. We love to put them on and come up with funky dances.

Cartoons and Classical Music sounds so cool. I’m trying to wean my daughter off the kiddie music, but she’s still hanging on to Laurie Berkner. She does like Bon Jovi, Keith Urban and Elvis, though, so I’m calling it a win.

Looking forward to your shuffle at Music Savvy Mom! :-)

Dayton Philharmonic did an evening of Hitchcock film scores with the clips projected on the screen in February. Next February will be James Bond film scores. Same deal. Lots o’ fun.
