Moms! Tell me what Twitter means to you for #140Conf
June 9, 2009
Next Tuesday, June 16th, I have the privilege of presenting a panel, with @Audreymcclellan and @jessicagottlieb, about Moms Using Twitter, at @JeffPulver’s 140Conf#. I love Jessica’s and Audrey’s insights on and offline, and am so excited to hear more of their perspectives.
Jeff is one my favorite people in social media. He routinely puts his extremely agile brain and good heart to work connecting others around the world, while being a true student of what those connections mean.
The chance to represent moms, and how we engage in 140 characters or less, is really neat. But we want to do it accurately. I’m anxious to hear your voices. Why you talk to hundreds (or thousands!) of strangers every day. What do you get from them? What do you give? How or why do you market your business there?
And, most essentially, what does Twitter have that makes moms flock to it? It’s clearly a community of value to us: Why? And what do we add to it?
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. @one of us on Twitter,l eave a comment, whatever works: but tell us “Why Twitter for Moms?” I’ll be compiling a list of insights gathered here and on Twitter from you: please be sure to leave your @Twittername so we can give you a shout out. Thanks for making Twitter my virtual water cooler, sounding board, and networking place all in one.

For me, Twitter is like that cathartic message in a bottle thing – where you write down your troubles, thoughts, etc…, seal it in a bottle and toss down stream like the Native Americans used to do. I can bitch about my mother in law keeping a calendar of when I clean the house — and once bitched and tweeted it’s off my chest. @jharveyrocks

I use twitter as search engine for advice. As with any search I do on google or bing, I don’t take all entries found. I pick and choose. I sift and sort. I look at the person’s twitter persona as a measure of whether of the effectiveness of their advice. I want to interact on twitter. Sometimes a simple tweet for information can lead to an iongoing conversation. Two examples: I tweeted about my feisty 6 yo and got lots of ways to help him decompress from the school day. I tweeted about my daughter’s ADHD medication…when to increase dose. Twitter is an advice source for moms. A virtual coffee klatch.

I think for the most part I have found some of my favorite bloggers through the conversations made on Twitter. Of course you could go to a social network and find like-minded people but Twitter offers access to millions of women quickly. As a mother, we all know quick and effective works best!

Twitter is about feeling connected for me. As a mom (and a work from home mom, and a mom blogger) it is easy to feel a bit isolated at times. Twitter has kept me company, made me giggle, given me important news (I heard about the CA earthquakes THE SECOND they happened – impt b/c I have a lot of family and friends there) and it is HELPED me. The day we were told to rush my daughter to Children’s hospital b/c she ‘might’ have Kawasakis disease – there wasn’t enough time to get all the answers I needed. I mentioned my fear on Twitter and within 10 minutes multiple people had researched the disease and were feeding me ‘peace of mind’ information.
Twitter just might be my favorite recent invention….

Wow, I’m amazed by the varied but all so powerful reasons you’re using Twitter. I’m hearing for connection, for research, for an RSS reader, for venting, for news. And I can feel the emotional connection we all have to this tool. Thanks SO MUCH for sharing in depth, I appreciate it!

Why does twitter work for me?
1. No labels: I’m just, well, me. I’m a geek, a marketing professional, a mother, a wife, a reader, a researcher, a fan, a blogger , a runner, a Spanish speaker, a chocolate lover, a news junkie and more.
And as just as I juggle all these roles in my life as a mother, there’s no contradition in my Twitter village. I don’t feel limited, don’t feel stereotyped, and enjoy the variety in my stream.
2. No time- hey, moms have no time for themselves, right? 140-chars (or less!) are amazing therapy. And news sources. And radio streams. And socializing venues. Fast.
3. No commitment – Twitter does not make you commit to another as a follower – just unfollow, no fuss. There is also no commitment to time zones, twittering hours, frequency, style or topics. We are devoted to enough important causes as it is. The freedom Twitter provides is very refreshing.

I attended Jeff Pulver’s SocComm last February and I especially enjoyed your panel! In fact, I learned so much that day, anybody who can go is very fortunate. So, why do moms tweet? I feel that there are many reasons, so I tam going to narrow it down to my top 5 reasons. 1. Follow the influencers…as a new mommy blogger, I found the tweets and links from social media masterminds like @jessicaknowes, @BethRosen, @KatjaPresnal, @RoleMommy, and @BarbaraJones very helpful. 2. What is trending in your niche….I focus on kosher food products so I follow blogs that focus on this niche as well like @YeahThatsKosher, @Koshereye, @Sabra, and @KosherFood. 3. To drive traffic to my blogs….I try to tweet out short and tweets so followers will want to read my blog 4. I follow big contest/giveaway bloggers because I love to win free stuff…@resourcefulmommy, @mommyniri, @blmo3, and @momfuse, and 5. I love to know what kid friendly events are going on in the tri-state area so I follow…@mommypoppins, @nycitymama, @madijack, @mominthecity, and @timeoutkidsny. Hope this helps and please keep in touch.
