Lykke Li Lusciousness

I had a great Girl’s Night out on Saturday night, with one of my “oldest” friends, Alesia. (Ha ha- that joke never gets old.) No, seriously, she’s only two years older than me, but I’ve known her since my pre-kindergarten days and we were raised as quasi-sisters. So it was refreshing to be out with no husbands, no kids, and go rock out to the Scandinavian techno beat of Lykke Li.

I say Scandiniavian techno, but don’t be confused- This is no “Ace of Bass”. This chick is an amazing artist, with a smoky, sweet voice, and the swagger to cover Tribe Called Quests “Can I kick It?” Yep, Lykke, you sure can.

The show was in a very different venue- the historic synagogue at the corner of 6th and I in DC. It was really cool to see Lykke in a venue that has a 421 capacity, since she’s playing some big festivals like Coachella later this year. The synagogue was gorgeous, and due to its historic designation, the sound was reasonable, even without earplugs.

We chose to sit in the balcony, sidestage, even though it meant we saw the band from behind. It actually gave us an amazing view of her crazy percussion dude. I have never seen anyone play drums quite like this man. Standing, bent over, putting his whole body into this tribal beat. It was stellar.

When Lykke first came out, she called, “It feels almost religious, no?” And it did.

The most fun part? The woman two rows in in front of us looked really normal- until the second song. Then, she suddenly released her alter-ego- Really Good Dancer Girl. Like, REALLY good. She had great moves, and I don’t think she repeated one the whole show. Alesia and I resolved to take some pole dancing classes or something, although I’m not sure anything will help me. LOL.
