Favorite Beatles song, and catch up
December 2, 2008
Wow, my blog is still here! It’s been a whirlwind few weeks, but everything is ok. Both of my gorgeous moms are still fighting their battles- my mom will be getting a mastectomy in January, and my MIL is halfway through her chemo- she’s tough, but I’m worried. She’s so, so little. At Thanksgiving she insisted on sitting at the kid’s table, and when I say the Kid’s table, I mean the one with the chairs 2 feet off the ground. LOL. She looked right at home with her 4′11 self.
The little ones were so, so glad to see her. She took care of them 2 days a week since they were born, but I’ve been keeping them away because she’s immunosuppressed, and all anyone needs is germy lil kids climbing all over her. But I could tell how happy she was to see them, too. She colored with a fierce joy, and played trains with reckless abandon.
In a fit of escapism this week, I’ve read about 10 Lee Child novels. (Yes, my house is a mess.) If you don’t know Lee Child, he’s a master of army mystery/thrillers. He’s created one of my favorite literary characters of all time, Jack Reacher. Reacher is a 6′5 military policeman, with blue eyes, who can handle anything that comes his way as long s he’s had a cup of coffee. He has an internal alarm clock that I’m insanely jealous of, and a knack for the ladies and attracting trouble. I also really like Lee’s female characters, who are usually characterized as hot by how smart and strong they are. Well, and their legs.
There’s just something really attractive about moving through the world with the kind of confidence Jack Reacher has. It’s not a swagger or bravado, but a certainty born of experience. Pret-ty cool. Now, if you don’t like violence, don’t read em, for sure. But overall, I’m not looking forward to returning them to the library.
In the one I’m reading right now, “The Enemy”, has a question about what are the sounds unique to the 21st century. Reacher says armored tanks, but thinks some optimist somewhere would say a Beatles song. It reminded me of how much I love the Beatles. I first heard them at sleepaway camp when I was eleven.
There was a boy (isn’t there always?) names Adrian, who played Strawberry Fields Forever all the time, and Penny Lane. But when I got home and got my very own first Beatles record, the song that caught my ear and wouldn’t let go was “Lady Madonna.” Maybe because I feel like there aren’t that many Beatles songs from a female perspective, or because I love the fact that they said “Baby at your breast” all the way back then. And of course, the fact that the piano is so Fats Domino boogie woogie based is very appealing.
How bout you? Favorite Beatles song? I posit that even those who don’t like the Beatles have a favorite.

One of my favorites is “A Day in the Life.” I love the way it takes me on a trip, through the music and the imagery. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiFYOn1AFms

I’m gonna get beat up for saying this, but I’m not a Beatles fan. I just wanted to let you know that I’m still reading, and still praying for your moms.
I’m glad Grandma got some time with the kiddos. I’m sure it helped her feel better!

Blackbird because I’ve spent the last 9 years listening to my husband sing it quietly to our children every night at bedtime. And it’s lyrically beautiful, too. There are many Beatles songs that are woven through the fabric of my life.

I was a big Beatlemania freak in junior high and into high school. I remember writing a few book reports on them. It’s hard to nail down a favorite favorite because there were so many incarnations of my infatuation with them. Right now, I’m thinking of one of my favorites… Norwegian Wood. I just liked the sound of it with George on the sitar and all happy and uplifting. You got to hide your love away… Not boppy… not rocky… just soft and mellow and would always put me in a trance.
Good stuff.

At least I know you are alive!
A sista gets worried when her sista is so quiet! Glad to know you were just enjoying some real life reading!
As far as Beatles songs… Either “Hey Jude” because Levi was almost Jude and “Revolution.” Just cuz it’s a million kinds of awesome.
Big hugs and all our healthy vibes to your moms.

Wow,great thought….We love the Beatles in our house, our faves….the kids & I that is! Dear Prudence, Blackbird, Mother Nature’s Son and I’m Happy Just To Dance With You are a few. Like others not sure I can pick just one depends on day I guess, today Dear Prudence! The wee ones were really jammin’out to it! LOL

Wow. Now I have to get out a Beatles CD and think this one over because I’m not so sure I can pick just one song. I do love Lady Madonna – probably for the same reasons you do – the phrase “Baby at your breast” is a powerful and vulnerable line in the song.
From a writer perspective, I’ve always loved the song “Paperback Writer”, but “Yesterday” and “Let it Be” also strike chords with me.
Off to do some writing and dream of my future as a Paperback Writer!

Mama, my favorite Beatles song changes according to my mood. Right now, I’m enjoying listening to the Love CD mash-up of Beatles hits, especially “Within You Without You/Tomorrow Never Knows”, but tomorrow that may change. As long as I’m here, I would like to invite you to take part in the Blogger Album Project.

I’m a Stones guy myself.
That being said, I’ve always been fond of “I Saw Her Standing There,” “Eleanor Rigby” and “The Ballad of John and Yoko.”

Blackbird, without a doubt. I remember singing it in choir when I was in high school, and I have just always loved it. It is beautiful. Such a good message.

I’m not a huge Beatles fan, but I like “Revolution,” “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and “Ballad of John and Yoko.”

It is so hard to choose, but my favorite has to be ” I Will” that has to be one of the greatest love songs. Ever.
My dad is a Beatles freak and he assigned us each a funny Beatles song when we were kids.
Mine was the “Little Piggies” one. I’m not sure how I’m supposed to feel about that….
good vibes beind sent up for your mamas!

I am keeping you and your mom’s in my thoughts. I know that it all can be frustrating watching it all happen, but know that we are thinking of you.
Now, onto my favorite Beatles song. I would have to say As my Guitar Gently Weeps, followed by Norwegian Wood.
Hang in there.

I’m Only Sleeping. There was a boy, isn’t there always. In college, my boyfriend, Matt, was a huge Beatles fan and while I was a purist (Maxwell’s Silver Hammer!) he introduced me to Revolver which is still my fav album to this day.

Growing up, I played my brothers’ Sgt. Peppers record (yes, real vinyl) so many times I swear the needle dragged through to the other side. I had never heard any of the other stuff, and when I did, I hated it. To this day, it’s Sgt. Peppers and nothing else.

Is this a trick question? I mean, is there a Beatle’s song that has not, at one time or another, been a favorite?
That being said I love George’s stuff….While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Here Comes The Sun, Something….. and of course( non George stuff) Hey Jude , Back in the USSR, Little Help From My Friends, and…..whatever Beatles song I next hear on the radio or iPod!
