Apparently Myspace has noticed Moms are on the internet! There’s an interesting article in “Wired” today about the expansion of Myspace’s music service. Here’s the section that caught my eye:
“MySpace hopes to advertise to more than just the teenagers widely assumed to be the main users of the site. “It doesn’t matter if you’re a Frank Sinatra fan or a Willie Nelson fan or if you love the Black Eyed Peas,” according to Berman.(Myspace spokesman) “40 percent of moms are on MySpace.”
We assume that these moms are mostly on MySpace to keep an eye on their kids. (Emphasis Mine-LRM) Maybe they’ll find it worthwhile to listen to some music while they keep tabs on their progeny, and possibly decide to upgrade their auto insurance, buy a new car or take the family out for fast food as a result.”
Mmmmmmkay, Wired. Is it so farfetched that 40% of moms are on Myspace because they…I don’t know…have cyber-lives? That we would listen to music because we like it, because it matters to us. not because we’re lurking on the internet, waiting for our teen to try to bring home some 40 year old posing as 15?
On the other hand, kudos to Myspace for realizing that this is a valid market.
Maybe my panties are in a bunch for nothing. But the implication that the primary value of moms on Myspace is as a consumer or a babysitter irks me. What do you think?
