“Wired” article about Myspace Music service reaching out to Moms

Date September 16, 2008

Apparently Myspace has noticed Moms are on the internet! There’s an interesting article in “Wired” today about the expansion of Myspace’s music service. Here’s the section that caught my eye:

“MySpace hopes to advertise to more than just the teenagers widely assumed to be the main users of the site. “It doesn’t matter if you’re a Frank Sinatra fan or a Willie Nelson fan or if you love the Black Eyed Peas,” according to Berman.(Myspace spokesman) “40 percent of moms are on MySpace.”

We assume that these moms are mostly on MySpace to keep an eye on their kids. (Emphasis Mine-LRM) Maybe they’ll find it worthwhile to listen to some music while they keep tabs on their progeny, and possibly decide to upgrade their auto insurance, buy a new car or take the family out for fast food as a result.”

Mmmmmmkay, Wired. Is it so farfetched that 40% of moms are on Myspace because they…I don’t know…have cyber-lives? That we would listen to music because we like it, because it matters to us. not because we’re lurking on the internet, waiting for our teen to try to bring home some 40 year old posing as 15?

On the other hand, kudos to Myspace for realizing that this is a valid market.

Maybe my panties are in a bunch for nothing. But the implication that the primary value of moms on Myspace is as a consumer or a babysitter irks me. What do you think?

I must admit, I am on FaceBook because my nephew wanted me to see the pictures he was posting. But MySpace? When I’m there I’m mostly dinking around in Band Land. Most of the indie bands we book have MySpace pages and if you want to know what they sound like, that’s where you go.

Don’t be silly – Mom’s couldn’t possible have ANY life outside of their offspring. That’d be crazy.

I’m on MySpace. Have been for several years, now. Play there often and really enjoy it.

None of my kids are even allowed on the internet, yet. Sorry, “Wired”, you don’t have me pegged.

Not a mom, so can’t speak personally, but most of my mom-friends are on Facebook for social reasons, however they also tinker around on MySpace for musical interests. I have been seeing an increasing number of my musically-minded, singer/songwriter friends migrating to FB though. Hm… Food for thought.

Thanks ladies. This is what happens when I drink waaayyyy too much coffee and post. I’ve also been watching far too much Mad men, and the rampant sexism of the era is rankling, even when posed for artistic purposes. So then I see it in Wired…LOL.

40% of what moms? I hate when they use useless statistics. Most moms grew up using computers or used them in the workplace before becoming a mom. Uh, yeah we’re on the web.

What can you expect from Wired. There a magazine about the internet. A paper magazine about the internet. People who use the internet actually USE THE INTERNET for their news. It makes one wonder the target audience of Wired?

I joined Facebook as a marketing tool, then ended up reconnecting with dozens of high school classmates I hadn’t talked to in years. Shockingly, we Moms have social lives too! Haven’t joined MySpace yet, partly because I spend waaaaay too much time on-line as it is…
