In honor of Manager Mom’s Office-Pallooza, I’m offering a tour of my corner of the kitchen workspace to you folks. If my desk is overflowing (more often than not) I plunk my Macbook at the kitchen table.
Here’s how a typical workday unfolds.
Set alarm for 6 am to take advantage of time before kids wake up.
Wake up at 7:45 screaming, “Get up! Get your shoes on! We’re late again…why are all these towels still wet?” Throw still frozen waffles at children and deliver to various childcare options.
9 am: Arrive home from Camp/Grandparent run. Make espresso and breakfast, and list things to accomplish for the day. Make list unreasonably long, include holdovers from three months ago to insure no matter how much actually gets done, I will still feel behind.
10 am: Ignore list, read Gawker, Twitter, NYT and blogs until my eyes start to bleed internally. Remember that I wear glasses.
11: 30ish Make lunch, recall that I’m actually on deadline for things that people pay me for and am teaching a class next week for which I’m ill-prepared. Resolve to rein in ADD and tend to these things.
12:15 ish Forget resolve. Write blog post. Husband comes in to ask, “Sweet Jesus! What are you still doing on the internet?”
1 pm: Pick up Kid 2 from camp, face the reality that my working day is complete. But it’s OK, because I’ll set the alarm for 6 am the next day.
Obviously, not all days are like this. Some days, I go to Panera. That’s when I actually get stuff done.
So Here’s my office type place…
