Neil Young calls out Apple at tech conference

I have a longstanding love of Neil Young, harkening back to “Heart of Gold”. It’s one of the first songs I remember learning all the words too (not hard, I know.) I was maybe 6, cruising in my mom’s Impala wagon, rocking out.

But times have changed, and Neil isn’t digging it. CNN Money reports that at the Brainstorm Tech conference earlier this week,  Neil shared the stage with Time editor John Huey. Neil lamented the changes services such as Itunes have wrought in music quality, and likened the typical Ipod sound to that of a “Fisher Price” toy. I had to laugh…my Ipod never scares the bejesus out of me at 3 am when it randomly starts talking in the toybox.

We definitely have a collection of old school LPs here, but I guiltily admit that we never break them out, opting for digital convenience over analog warmth and quirks.

What about you? Do you miss the old school delivery of music, or is any way you can get it good enough? And what actual physical “records” do you still own? I have the “Gone With the WInd” soundtrack. (Thanks Bro!)

Chris still has some lps, but I gave all mine away the last time I moved. I don't miss them even a little. I love love love having all my music in one little place and instantly accessible. Chris is the audio guy and he's never complained about the sound quality. He does, however, complain about the singing schoolbus which randomly goes off in the toybox.

I'm the wrong person to answer this question because I still listen to classic rock on LPs!!! I do have CDs for the car, but I just like the sound of the LPs better. I don't own an iPod, mainly because I'm still living in the 1980s! However, my youngest daughter loves her iPod and she thinks I'm senile because I listen to LPs. Go figure!!!Sorry, I'm going to have to side with Neil on this one!

Two albums I refuse to listen to on anything other than LPs: 1. Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here 2. Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life Honorable Mention: Bob Dylan - Desire

Wow, we have tons of old stuff, packed away in the attic. ( I have the King and I soundtrack, the Wizard of Oz, Hot Rocks, Ziggy Stardust, Beach Boys, etc; lol ) The ease of getting music fast, means listening more often. I have I Pod players all over, but in the car, I still use CDs, I hate losing the channel with the Ipod, I'll get myself killed someday fooling around with that transmitter thingee. Hey, I just realized I could travel to more shows if I clean the attic and update my e-bay. THX!

You guys are making me want to go get some actual (gasp) records out, and do a science experiment. It's one of things that just *happened* for me, the whole digital transition, and I never thought to question it. But if Neil says...:)

While I do miss the scratchy sound of my imperfect vinyl collection, I opt to listen to mp3s these days....mp3s don't stick, skip, or drag. Nothing brings out my evil, nasty, b**chy side quite like, or as fast as, a static-ky radio station, or stuck/skipping/dragging cds. I can't even get started on the tapes!

Oh man CIII, Wish You Were Here is our dating music. I think the crackle of a needle on vinyl would only enhance the experience. But unfortunately, I only have the CD. Scratched from my husband's first generation Alpine CD player, but not the same.I have to say that I've completely converted to my ipod. My brother still has his vinyl, but the closest I came was tapes. They sucked. I'm a sucker for technology, plus I love taking my entire music collection with me anywhere I go.
