I think I’ve spent about 6 hours on the internet today. Not straight, of course, kids don’t much like that. We went to the Farm in the morning to pick up our share of this week’s harvest…I have a bumper crop of blueberries and will have to figure out how to make Vegan muffins. I’ve been making my Grandmother’s kind without the recipe for 25 years now, so this will be a switch.
She lived on a blueberry farm in Hammonton, NJ (Blueberry Capital of the World, the sign proclaims as you roll into town.) I spent my summers taking money from the pick-your-own people and trying to get out of picking berries. It took sooooo long. You could hear those things clinking on the bottom of the metal barrel forever. At least my barrel. My mom can fill a 2 quart can in the time it takes me to cover the bottom. The point is, this is the first week Hammonton blueberries were in the store, so I bought a big thing at Trader Joe’s. Then I got them from the CSA this morning, too. The ones from Hammonton are a little bit early yet…July is when they peak. On August 2nd, I’ll be in the neighborhood for a show, and I may make a pilgrimage to Hammonton to stock my freezer for the winter.
