Black Keys, reconsidered

So I didn’t think I liked the Black Keys. Too gimmicky, I thought, too much like The White Stripes except called the Black Keys. It didn’t help that the first time I actually heard them was at 3 am while driving to the airport. Nothing sounds good for the first time at 3 am. BUT, I’ve heard “Strange Times” twice in the car in 2 days, and can’t get it out of my head.

It’s a curiously repetitive song vocally, but something about the tempo changes and the driving percussive force behind it make me think of a superhero’s theme song. Kind of like Mighty Mouse, in fact, only lower end, therefore hotter. I’m annoyed at myself for not liking them sooner, as they recently played two sold out shows in a row at the 9:30 club. That should have told me something. But nooooooooo…

I’m going out with NO kids tonight…dinner with the girls for Sherry H.’s birthday. Sweeeeet. After a week of 24/7 kids in the Outer Banks (minus the blessed grandparent relief) I’m ready to go out and paint the town. Or drink Pellegrino, as the case may be. But you know what? Those bubbles make me punchy.

Tomorrow is the first day of our CSA pickup at the Red Wiggler farm,(www.redwiggler.org) and I am STOKED. Back in February, we paid for a share in the harvest of the farm this year, and now it’s time to reap the rewards. We went to a muffin meet and greet there the other week, and it’s such a great place. We ate asparagus out of the ground, and I gotta tell you, it was good. I didn’t think I would like raw asparagus, but felt quite a bit of peer pressure there in the field with the other semi-crunchy suburban moms. So I did it…and I kind of want more, but I’m worried it won’t be the same unless it comes straight from the field.

In other agricultural news, many stores seem to have Rainier Cherries in early this year…they’re usually July, but were at Whole Foods and Balducci’s this week. I’ve stocked up, as their sweet yellow flesh is crackilicious to me. And now, off to change up and shower for the first time in…well, I’ll spare you the details. But that’s rock and roll, right? or grungy suburban mommy…whatevah.

Closing with a link to “Strange Times”. Let me know if it’s as weird and haunting to you as it is to me.

xoxo, L

I just read your bio and good heavens I too have seen Peter Murphy in concert! AND my friend Sarah (who's playing a show tonight while I sit on her kids) took the day off with me yesterday and we went out on the town. It rocked. Love the kids. Also love being about to have conversations without using pig latin.
